Uses of a USB memory flash drive

A USB memory flash drive is a small device. Due to its small size, big memory and sturdiness provided by the hard cover to provide you liberty to move around and to do your office work from anywhere as you please, it is considered as most suitable means for data transfer. You can move around with your data in your pocket with ease and confidence. But there is much more this small equipment can do. Greg shultz has numerated at least 10 uses of the USB flash drive, in addition to the data transfer. Please read below to know about these fantastic uses.

Run portable programs

A USB memory flash drive is capable of running portable application programs like ‘open office’. This portable software comprises upon all the necessary applications required by anybody to carry out office work. It has word processor, excel, powerpoint and drawing software which are the basic tools for office work. Mozilla firefox and thunderbird can also be used from your flash drive. A combination of all these constitute your virtual office, which you can operate from anywhere, if you have a computer

Booting an operating system

At times, you may come across the need to boot some operating system from your USB. Luckily it is possible and there are methods to do this. If you follow the instructions properly, you can boot linux and windows xp from your flash derive. You can find the complete instructions to boot these applications in the articles ‘creating a bootable USB flash drive’ and ‘puppy linux teaches an old dog new tricks’ respectively.

Access to a wireless network

If somebody is using a wireless network, he can use the USB memory flash drive to copy and save the wireless network settings from window xp-wireless network setup wizard, or window vista- ‘windows connect now’. This drive then can be used to connect any other computer or compatible device like a printer or router, to the wireless net work. To seek detailed instructions you may consult ‘help and support center’ from windows xp start menu and windows vista start menu.

Make a password reset drive

To prevent misuse of our computers most of us use pass word. This password allows access to the computers only after the verification and authentication of the user. But, at times we forget our password, resulting in a lot of frustration and loss of time. A pass word re set disk is used to solve this problem. In windows vista a USB flash drive can replace a disk to perform the same function.

Enhance speed

A USB memory flash drive flash derives can be used to provide additional memory and thus increase the speed of a computer. The ‘ready boost’ technique makes available the memory on a USB for use with the memory on a hard disk. As the memory on a flash drive is quickly accessible than the memory of a hard derive because of no moving part it can speed up the functioning of the computer

To configure and use ‘ready boost’, connect usb flash drive to the computer with a vista system and follow the prompt on the screen. To learn more about this, read the article ‘how super fetch and ready boost work together ’

Students Going Off to College Can Take Their Outlook® Email with Them on a Portable USB Flash Drive

Nashua, NH (PRWEB) August 31, 2004

imagine LAN, Inc., a leading provider of software applications for flash drives to vendors, corporate customers and individual users, has developed a unique software application that enables students (and other highly mobile individuals) to port their Outlook® or Outlook Express email, account settings, contacts, etc. to a standard USB flash drive that can be accessed from virtually any Windows PC – anywhere.

P.I. Protector Mobility Suite is a perfect match for students for whom the use of multiple PCs at various locations (home, dorm, lab, library, etc.) is the norm. By pairing the inexpensive P.I. Protector software with a standard USB flash drive, students can use the flash drive as the central repository for their Outlook or Outlook Express email. They can easily carry the flash drive with them for use on any PC, where they can send and receive messages, manage their email, contacts, calendar, and access all their folders, messages and attachments – regardless of their location.

For many students, identity theft has become a major concern. P.I. Protector’s advanced “leave no trace” technology ensures that no traces of the user’s email or Internet Explorer activities are left behind on the host PC. Instead, P.I. Protector redirects email and internet browsing data to the USB flash drive. This eliminates the need to erase or “wash” data from the host system when the student’s session has been completed.

“As a busy student with a heavy course load” explains Natalie Sehovich, a marketing major at Merrimack College, “I’ve found P.I. Protector’s portable Outlook to be a huge convenience for me. I don’t have to lug my notebook everywhere just to have access to my email, and I’m comfortable knowing my private information won’t get left behind when I use a friend’s computer or a public terminal.”

P.I. Protector Mobility Suite enables users to create a portable PC environment—one in which a USB flash drive loaded with the appropriate software can turn any PC into their own “virtual system.” With this method, a user can plug their flash drive into any Windows PC and operate the host PC as if it were their own, by accessing their entire personal computing environment—files, email, Internet, and other settings from the flash drive, with full security and protection of their personal information. All data throughout the entire session that would normally be stored on the hard drive—such as email messages, files, cookies, passwords, URLs, etc.—is redirected to the USB flash drive, which prevents any information from reaching the hard drive of the system being used. Additionally, file synchronization enables users to update files between the flash drive and their PC, and it does not require installation or additional set up on the host computer.

Availability, Pricing and Requirements

P.I. Protector Mobility Suite supports Windows XP/2000/ME/98SE. In order to run portable Outlook, Outlook 2000 (C/W), 2002, or 2003 must be installed on the host computer. P.I. Protector requires a USB flash drive or other USB-based portable storage device (purchased separately) with a minimum 16MB of available space. P.I. Protector Mobility Suite costs $ 30 dollars (U.S.) per device license (for software download) or $ 40 for the program on CD. Software can be purchased online at http://www.imaginelan.com or by calling the company at (800) 372-9776. Contact Jan Olsen at jolsen@imaginelan.com or (603) 889-5889 to arrange for a briefing or to obtain evaluation software.

Flash Drive Direct saves over 500% energy consumption compared to conventional CD use.

(PRWEB) June 20, 2006

What is a Flash Drive? Flash drives are small, infinitely re-usable computer devices with a USB 2.0 interface.Their main purpose is to hold or transfer data from one computer to another. But what is their impact on the environment?

Information on Flash Drives environmental impact was presented to the electronics and promotional products industry recently. In it, Flash Drive Direct drives http://www.flashdrivedirect.com were tested and compared to the use of energy expounded when a CD is burned on a conventional PC to the energy consumed in the making of a USB Flash Drive.

The test results showed that the energy and petrochemicals consumed in the making of a conventional CD (even before it was burned with information) was 1.78 times compared to the energy consumed in the construction of the average Flash Drive.

Further research showed that the energy consumed in burning information (kilowatts) onto a CD was on average 15 times greater than the energy consumption of the simple transfer of the same amount of data USB Flash Drive.

“Considering that 97% of all CD sales are for 1 time use (non-rewritable) and that nearly half of all CD?s are used only 1.3 times (on average) for the simple transfer of data from 1 computer to another, when you compare that large amount of energy consumed to the small eco-footprint when using a Flash Drive it is fair to say the Flash Drives are deserving of the eco-friendly designation” states industry analyst John Graham.

In fact last month Flash Drive Direct was awared both RoHS compliancy and WEEE compliancy, the highest European standards. Update March 2008 Energy Star designation and TCO 2008 Certification awarded to flash drive design firm Flash Drive Direct.

Innovative Tools Protect Your Sensitive Data from Latest Virus Threat

Palm Harbor, FL (PRWEB) June 29, 2004

An effective method of preventing sensitive information from being harvested has become even more important to computer users since the recent outbreak of the “Scob” virus. This virus steals confidential information, such as passwords, online banking information and credit card numbers, from infected computers. Another threat to security comes from the fact that virus transmission is no longer limited to email & network delivery. Virus writers have found a new way to distribute their malicious payload by converting popular websites into virus transmitters.

Tech Assist Inc, a leading provider of computer security applications and utilities, introduces tools to help prevent virus infections from resulting in identity theft by providing secure data storage for the SMB and consumer marketplace. Hide-A-FileTM, along with KeyPerTM, a unique software/hardware (dual authentication) combination, enables users to safeguard the sensitive data on their PCs, as well as preventing credit card, password, and identity theft.

Hide-A-FileTM allows a user to create hidden partitions, with assignable drive letters into which the files to be hidden are simply dragged-and-dropped, copied & pasted, etc., into the protected partition. When the USB CryptoKeyTM (hardware component) is removed, the virtual partitions disappear without a trace, making important information stored within them completely inaccessible. Only the insertion of the USB CryptokeyTM and the password (dual authentication) make the hidden partitions visible again. This combination provides the user with virtually hack-proof, secure storage for financial data, contacts, photos, videos, etc. Any individual who searches the user’s computer without the proper permissions AND assigned USB CryptoKeyTM will be unable to view the partitions and will not “see” the data.

KeyPerTM functionality utilizes the onboard memory of the USB CryptoKeyTM to store vulnerable data, such as Internet resources, passwords and banking information. It also is an effective “Identity Management” tool, because personal information is not stored on the computer but on the USB CryptoKeyTM. By copying and pasting personal information from the USB CryptoKeyTM, keystroke capture programs used for identity theft, such as the “Scob” virus, are bypassed. Unplug the USB CryptoKeyTM and personal information goes with you, wherever you go.

In today’s world, you can never be too safe or too secure. Hide-A-FileTM and KeyPerTM effectively eliminate the worry associated with data & identity theft at home and at work.

Innovative Logic Announces Free Licensing of Their USB 3.0 SuperSpeed IP

Inno-Logic USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Device Controller

Santa Clara, CA (PRWEB) July 06, 2011

Innovative Logic Inc.(Inno-Logic), leading provider of reusable standard based Intellectual Property (IP) and ASIC/FPGA design & verification services announced today they will start free licensing their USB3.0 Device Controller IP for prototyping purposes. Inno-Logic will also help their customers to create prototype by sharing their expertise in that area. The Inno_logic’s USB3.0 Device Controller IP is very stable, fully verified by many of customers and partners for last 2 years. Inno-Logic has also been show casing fully working USB3.0 mass storage demo. The demo demonstrates all USB3.0 functionality flawlessly between Inno_logic’s USB3.0 Device Controller and host controller from the most popular USB3.0 vendor. The following are some of the key features of Inno-Logic’s USB3.0 IP:

Key Features

Fully compliant with USB 3.0 specification v1.0.
Fully compliant with USB3.0 PIPE specification.
Support all transfer types – Control, Bulk, Isochronous and Interrupt transfers.
Support upto 15 IN & 15 OUT functional endpoints along with a default control endpoint.
Support industry standard 32 bit bus interface – AMBA AXI.
System verilog based coverage driven verification.
Verification done using more than one reputed Verification IP

“An option of free licensing for prototyping purposes will ease the anxiety of new customers to ensure that the IP is fully working before going through lengthy legal process of negotiating the licensing terms. In the past, many customers burnt out by hearing very good stories and then saw the complete opposite after licensing. We need to change that trend and start having some trust factor between the customer and IP vendor” said Dinesh Tyagi, President & CEO.

Inno-Logic’s USB3.0 solution has gone through extensive pre and post silicon tests to ensure that it works seamlessly at customer end. We have also tested our IP using multiple PHY and VIP vendors. Inno-Logic is also showcasing fully working demo on request basis. This demo demonstrates how easily you can connect our controller to your PC without going through any learning curve.

USB3.0 will facilitate users to download data up to 5.0 Gbits/sec (Super-Speed mode). This will make users much comfortable transferring the data for high-end devices such as HD videos, high resolution pictures, big software database in far lesser time compared to older technology. Typical USB3.0 based applications are removable hard drives, flash drives, high-end video and imaging devices, HDTV displays, high-resolution printer/scanner, etc.

USB3.0 IP is currently available for licensing worldwide. The IP is currently available in both soft IP and FPGA netlist formats. The soft IP deliverables include RTL source code, test vectors, scripts and User Manual. The FPGA netlist deliverables include test vectors, scripts, User Manual along with the FPGA netlist. The FPGA netlist will be licensed to qualified customers by just charging a token support fee to create release for select FPGA devices and some associated support around it. The complete FPGA demo is also available . It uses 3rd party FPGA board and 3rd party USB3.0 host controller.
